Impact100 Sonoma (California) and Giving Together, Inc. (greater Washington DC) will share their stories, perspectives and lessons learned from implementing new grantmaking approaches to effectively support nonprofits in their communities.
Hear why changes were sought, what changes were adopted and how these changes were implemented. They will also share the results/impact on the grant process for the grantees and those they served. Learn more about member engagement efforts to gain support as they evolved from being “donor-centric” to “community-centric” and how this changed their organizations work and visibility in the community. Finally, hear about lessons learned and thoughts about next steps as they continue to strive to better meet the needs of nonprofit organizations in their respective communities.
About Impact100 Sonoma: This Northern California circle has made a variety of changes in grant making over its 15 years. After many conversations and taking a hard look at their nonprofit community, Impact100 Sonoma decided that the traditional $100,000 Impact 100 model was not going to be a fit in their community. The result was changing their grant making in several ways: size of grants, multi-year options and a focus on supporting the organization’s need versus requiring a special project. Presenters for this circle are Dana Simpson-Stokes and Kathy Bloch.
About Giving Together: This Washington DC area circle has also evolved its grant making approach over the years. From a program that initially made single, project-based one-year grants, the circle now has two grant tracks, with separate multi-year and Accelerator awards. The Accelerator, established after the Nation's racial reckoning of 2020, is now in its fourth year and is dedicated to emerging BIPOC-led and -benefiting local non-profits. During the life of the program, the number and size of grants has varied, and the program has expanded beyond its original focus on Black-led nonprofits to include the current emphasis on BIPOC-led and -benefiting nonprofits. Presenters for this circle are Renee Licht and Wendy Yaross.
